Nallu Indrasena Reddy was born on 1 January 1953 in Ganugabanda village in what was then Madras State and is now part of Suryapet District in Telangana. He grew up in a region that later became part of the new state of Telangana and lists Hyderabad as his hometown. Reddy completed his schooling in Telangana, studying science through higher secondary, and went on to earn a BSc from Government City College (1972), an MSc in Mathematics from Osmania University (1974) and an MPhil from Kakatiya University (1975).

Reddy comes from a Hindu family. His father was Nallu Ram Reddy and his mother, Nallu Hanumayamma, lived to the age of 90. He is married to Renuka, who is described as a businesswoman.

Early political activity and activism

Reddy's public life began in student and volunteer wings associated with the Sangh ideology. As a student he was connected to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and was active in its student wing, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, rising to a leadership role in Andhra Pradesh. He served three terms as a Member of the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly, winning elections from the Malakpet constituency in 1983, 1985 and 1999. In the 1985 assembly poll he defeated the sitting chief minister Nadendla Bhaskara Rao by a substantial margin. Reddy also contested multiple Lok Sabha elections from different constituencies—Nalgonda (2004), Malkajgiri (2009) and Bhongir (2014)—but was unsuccessful in those bids. After the 2014 general election cycle he stepped back from electoral contests.

Throughout his legislative career Reddy advocated measures on political transparency; one of his first motions after entering the assembly in 1985 was a call for mandatory public disclosure of legislators' assets.
