Namit Malhotra Biography
Namit Malhotra is an Indian film producer, media executive and businessman from a family with multi-generational roots in the film industry. He founded and
Early life and backgroundNamit Malhotra was born on 2 April 1976 in Mumbai, Maharashtra. Raised in a family with a long history in filmmaking, he is the grandson of cinematographer M. N. Malhotra and the son of film producer Naresh Malhotra. He completed his schooling at Jasudben M. L. School and earned a B.Com. degree from H.R. College of Commerce and Economics in Mumbai.
From an early age Malhotra became interested in film production and later studied computer graphics. While he initially explored drawing, he found his strengths lay in the technical and business aspects of image-making and post-production. He trained under teachers Merzin Tavaria, Huzefa Lokhandwala and Prakash Kurup, and soon after their brief period of collaboration the group decided to start a company together.
Career
In 1995 Malhotra and his three mentors launched a post-production business called Video Workshop, operating from his father’s garage in Mumbai. The firm provided editing, picture enhancement, visual effects and release services and worked on television projects including Boogie Woogie and Gaatha, as well as assignments for Channel V.
Two years later Video Workshop merged with his father’s production and equipment-rental business to form Prime Focus. Under Malhotra’s leadership Prime Focus expanded its services across editing, colour correction and visual effects for Indian films and introduced Digital Intermediate (DI) technology to India, giving filmmakers new digital tools to adjust colour and appearance.
Prime Focus continued to grow technologically and commercially. The company is reported to have been the first visual-effects firm in India to operate a motion-controlled rig in 2004 and went public in 2006 on the Bombay Stock Exchange and the National Stock Exchange. From the mid-2000s Malhotra oversaw international expansion; the group entered the UK and made North American acquisitions beginning in 2007.
A landmark moment came in 2014 when Prime Focus acquired the UK-based visual-effects house Double Negative (DNEG). Under the combined leadership, DNEG contributed VFX work to major international films and went on to win multiple Academy Awards for Best Visual Effects for projects including Tenet and the Dune films.
Malhotra also moved into film production. He served as a creative producer and financier on the fantasy film Brahmastra: Part One – Shiva (2022). He later played a leading role in producing the two-part cinematic adaptation of the Ramayana directed by Nitesh Tiwari, a large-scale project presented to international audiences at CinemaCon in Las Vegas in April 2026.
Public profile
Malhotra has been recognised with several industry honours: an Asian Achievers Award in 2022, acknowledgements at the IIFA, Filmfare and Zee Cine Awards in 2023, a National Film Award in 2024, an Academy Award in 2025 for Dune: Part Two, and a Technology & Engineering Emmy Award in 2026. He is known for bringing technology and modern post-production workflows to Indian cinema and for expanding a homegrown company into a global VFX and post-production group.
Personal life
Namit Malhotra is married to Ami Malhotra, an eye surgeon, and the couple have two sons, Raghav and Raghveer. He lives in Mumbai, follows a non-vegetarian diet, and is described as an animal lover who shares images of his pet dog on social media.
Latest updates
In October 2026 the Income Tax Department carried out searches at offices linked to Prime Focus as part of an inquiry; the company stated it was cooperating and had not received findings or demands at that time. In April 2026 he participated in presenting the Ramayana project internationally, appearing alongside actor Yash at CinemaCon to introduce the film to an overseas audience.
