Early life and background

Namrata Shirodkar was born on 22 January 1972 in Mumbai and raised in a Maharashtrian-Goan family. The daughter of former model Vanita Shirodkar and the late Nitin Shirodkar, she grew up around the entertainment and fashion world. She completed her graduation in Mumbai, studying at institutions that include Mithibai College of Arts and other local colleges.

Her entry into modelling began as a teenager when her mother introduced her to fashion photographer Gautam Rajadhyaksha. That initial photoshoot led to runway invitations from designers such as Hemant Trivedi and opened the door to a career in print and commercial modelling. During this period she appeared in advertisements and TV commercials for brands including Dabur Anmol Oil and Country Delight.

Namrata won the Femina Miss India title in 1993 and represented India at international pageants the same year. She finished fifth at Miss Universe 1993 and was the first runner-up at the Femina Miss India Asia Pacific contest, where she also won a Best in Evening Gown sub-contest.

Transitioning from modelling, Namrata began a film career that included work in multiple Indian languages as well as an international project. She first appeared as a child actor in the 1977 Hindi film Shirdi Ke Sai Baba, and later made her adult acting debut in Hindi films such as Jab Pyaar Kisise Hota Hai. Through the late 1990s and early 2000s she acted in a range of films across Hindi, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi and English, with credits that include Mere Do Anmol Ratan, Hero Hindustani, Kachche Dhaage, Astitva, Pukar, Dil Vil Pyar Vyar, LOC Kargil, Anji and Bride and Prejudice.

Her career also included regional projects such as the Kannada film Chora Chittha Chora, the Malayalam film Ezhupunna Tharakan and the Telugu film Vamshi. In 2004 she appeared opposite Chiranjeevi in the Telugu film Anji. Later she stepped back from acting after completing her film commitments prior to marriage.

Namrata moved into production and business roles in later years. She is listed as a producer on the Telugu/Hindi film Major (2022). She became a partner in the film production company AMB Cinemas LLP in January 2016 and holds director positions in G Mahesh Babu Entertainment Private Limited (established January 2014) and the Mahesh Babu Foundation (established June 2021).
