Nandre Burger was born on 11 August 1995 in Krugersdorp, Gauteng, South Africa, and grew up in the Gauteng province. He attended the University of the Witwatersrand (WITS) in Johannesburg on a scholarship, where he studied sports psychology. Cricket began as a pastime for him; childhood memories include informal games played with his mother and grandmother. His path to professional cricket was not straightforward—at 17 he considered quitting the game to pursue tennis, but back spasms forced him to stop playing racquet sports and nudged him back toward cricket.

Career

Burger’s early domestic career started with Gauteng. He made his first-class debut for Gauteng on 11 February 2016 in the Sunfoil 3-Day Cup. Shortly after, he made his Twenty20 debut on 14 February 2016 in the CSA Provincial T20 Challenge, and his List A debut followed on 26 February 2017 in the CSA Provincial One-Day Challenge. He emerged as Gauteng’s leading wicket-taker in the 2017–18 provincial one-day competition, taking 19 wickets in seven matches.
