Early life and background

Naorem Roshibina Devi was born on 30 December 2000 in the village of Kwasiphai Mayai Leikei in Bishnupur district, Manipur. She grew up in a farming family; her parents are Naoren Dhamu Singh and Romila Devi. She has at least two siblings, a brother named Naorem Prioijit Singh and a sister. Roshibina attended Chanambam Ibomcha College in Bishnupur and holds a Bachelor of Arts degree.

As a child she was drawn to combat sports and initially considered boxing. Around her teenage years she attended a wushu competition and that experience shifted her interest toward wushu. At about seven years old she began practicing by creating a makeshift punching bag from torn clothes. A local wushu practitioner, Malemnganbi Devi, provided informal training at home before Roshibina joined the Sports Authority of India (SAI) branch in Manipur to begin formal coaching under M. Premkumar.

Career

Roshibina made her international debut in junior competition, competing in the 48 kg class at the Burgas World Junior Wushu Championship in Bulgaria in 2016, where she earned a bronze medal. The following year she won gold at the Asian Junior Wushu Championship in Gumi, South Korea, marking her as one of India’s promising young sanda fighters.

She moved up to the sanda 60 kg division and represented India at senior regional and continental events. In 2018 she competed in the Asian Games in Jakarta in the 60 kg sanda category and later took part in the South Asian Games in Lalitpur, Nepal in 2019, where she won gold in the same weight class.

Roshibina continued to compete internationally, claiming a gold medal at the Moscow Wushu Stars Championship in 2023. She also competed at the 2022 Asian Games held in Hangzhou, China (event carried out in 2023), where she won a silver medal in the women’s 60 kg sanda division. Her performances have been recognized at the national level; she received the Arjuna Award in 2023.
