Career
Narayan Rane began his political life in the Shiv Sena as a local shakha pramukh in Chembur and later served as a councillor in Kopargaon. His rise through state politics culminated in his appointment as Chief Minister of Maharashtra, a post he held from 1 February 1999 until 17 October 1999.
Following a long association with Shiv Sena that began in 1968, Rane left the party in 2005 after being expelled for what the party described as anti-party activity. He then founded the Maharashtra Swabhiman Paksha in October 2017. The new party declared its support for the Bharatiya Janata Party, and Rane was elected to the Rajya Sabha on his party’s nomination.
In October 2019 he formally merged the Maharashtra Swabhiman Paksha with the Bharatiya Janata Party in a ceremony at Kankavli. Since 2019 he has been a BJP member. In 2021 he was given the charge of the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises in the second Modi government. In the 2024 general election he won the Ratnagiri–Sindhudurg Lok Sabha seat.
Outside elected office, Rane has been involved in publishing. In October 2008 he started a Marathi daily under Rane Prakashan Pvt. Ltd., where he serves as consulting editor.
