Early life and background

Narayan Sirumalani, also known by the name Narayan Prem Sai, was born on 29 January 1972 in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. He grew up in Ahmedabad and is the son of Asaram Bapu and Lakshmi Devi. From an early age he was immersed in a disciplined spiritual upbringing under the guidance of his father, which included living with ascetics and undertaking rigorous practices intended to build character and endurance.

During his school years he was reportedly a strong student in primary classes and took an early interest in spiritual life. He left formal schooling after ninth grade and thereafter devoted himself to serving his father and pursuing spiritual practices. Accounts indicate that he spent extended periods living in forested and ascetic environments in places such as Mount Abu, Himmantnagar, Jhabua, Haridwar and Rishikesh.

Career

Narayan Sai established himself as a religious leader who follows Advaita Vedanta and communicates a message focused on the presence of a supreme reality in every person. He has delivered religious discourses and led activities both in India and internationally, including appearances in Mauritius, the United Kingdom, Thailand, the United States, Hong Kong and Japan.

He founded a number of organizations and programmes aimed at social welfare. The Sai Lok Seva Trust (NSLST) is associated with several initiatives, including a Child Development Centre that offers instruction in traditional stories, yoga, moral training and exercises intended to stimulate intellect. Other campaigns he launched include rehabilitation and awareness programmes addressing substance abuse, a disaster-relief effort, and schemes to provide food and aid to people living below the poverty line.

Narayan Sai has promoted community health through mobile medical vans serving underserved areas and organized meditation and yoga camps. He also initiated conservation efforts through an organization focused on forest protection and development. To disseminate his ideas, he produced a monthly magazine and a video magazine, and released audio and video collections of devotional songs.

Legal matters and controversies have also been part of his public profile. A woman from Surat filed allegations against him related to events between 2002 and 2005. He was arrested on 4 December 2013 at the Delhi–Haryana border. He was held in judicial custody in Surat and later, in April 2019, a Surat Sessions Court sentenced him in a rape case to life imprisonment.
