Narender Berwal (Boxer), Biography

Indian super-heavyweight boxer from Hisar, Haryana. A decorated national and international competitor, Berwal is an Army JCO and won bronze at the 2022/202

Early life and background

Narender Berwal was born on 14 November 1994 in Hisar, Haryana. Raised in the same city, he developed into a tall, physically imposing athlete—listed at 1.92 m (6'4") and around 95 kg (209 lbs)—with black hair and black eyes. His parents are Jagdish Chander and Roshani Devi. He is unmarried.

Career

Berwal began boxing in 2010 and trained at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) center in Bhiwani, Haryana under coach Davraj. Fighting from an orthodox stance in the super-heavyweight division, he moved up through youth and junior competitions before establishing himself at the senior national and international levels.

As a junior and youth competitor he collected multiple national medals, including a bronze at the Junior National Championship in Chennai (2010) and gold at the 45th Junior Men National Championship in Patiala (2012). He made his international debut in 2012 at the World Youth Championships in Yerevan, Armenia and competed at the 2013 ASBC Asian Confederation Junior Boxing Championships in Subic, Philippines.

At senior level Berwal has been a consistent presence on the national podium. Highlights include gold medals at the 4th Elite Men National Boxing Championship (2019), the Senior National Boxing Championship (2021), another Senior National title in 2022, and gold at the National Games in Gujarat (2022). He also won gold at the South Asian Games in 2019.

On the international front he has registered podium finishes at major regional events. He earned a bronze at the Asian Boxing Championships in 2022 and captured a bronze medal in the super-heavyweight (+91 kg / +92 kg) event at the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China (reported in 2023). At the Asian Games semifinals he was defeated by Kamshybek Kunkabayev of Kazakhstan by a 0–5 scoreline, which meant he did not secure an Olympic quota through that tournament.

Berwal has also competed in and produced results at World Series of Boxing events. In 2018 he recorded a notable win over Sergey Egorov of Russia during a World Series of Boxing fixture in Rohtak, and he was part of a winning campaign at the World Series of Boxing in 2020. Domestically, in 2021 he progressed through the Indian National Championships, winning a semi-final match in Bellary against Sagar Chikara.

Public profile

Alongside his boxing career, Berwal serves as a Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) in the Indian Army. He is known to travel widely and has expressed personal preferences publicly, including an interest in the Mahindra Scorpio Classic. He maintains a public social media presence and has posted directly about his achievements and requests.
