Narendra Chanchal Biography

Early life and backgroundNarendra Chanchal was born Narendra Kharbanda on 16 October 1940 in Namak Mandi, Amritsar, Punjab. Raised in a Punjabi devotional household, his earliest musical memories were shaped by listening to his mother sing bhajans of Mata Rani. He attended Gian Ashram School in Amritsar and trained in music under his guru Prem Tikha.
From childhood he performed at religious gatherings and local events. As a teenager he sang at marriage parties, sometimes earning just a rupee, an early taste of public performance that pushed him toward a professional singing path. A young decision to skip a matriculation exam in order to compete in a Chandigarh singing contest proved pivotal: after winning, he resolved to pursue music as a career.
Career
Chanchal built his career singing bhajans, aartis and devotional numbers, and he eventually founded a music venture initially called Paradise Club, later renamed Paradise Entertainers. His stage performances and recordings of Mata Ki Bhenten and Kafian by Punjabi poet Bulle Shah established him as a popular devotional voice across Punjab.
A major break came in April 1972 when Chanchal performed at a Punjabi festival in Bombay. His singing impressed several film personalities, including Raj Kapoor, who offered him a chance to sing for the film Bobby. His film debut came in 1973 with the song "Beshak Mandir Masjid Todo" from Bobby, a recording that brought him broad recognition.
After Bobby, Chanchal balanced work in the film industry with his devotional repertoire. Noteworthy film songs across his career include "Main Benaam Ho Gayaa" (Benaam, 1974), "Mehngai Mar Gayi" (Roti Kapda Aur Makaan, 1974), "Do Ghut Pila De Sakia" (Kala Suraj, 1985), and "Huye Hain Kuchh Aise Wo Humse Paraye" (Anjaane, 1994). He was also associated with popular devotional film numbers such as "Tu Ne Mujhe Bulaya" (Aasha, 1980) and "Chalo Bulawa Aaya Hain Mata Ne Bulaya Hain" (Avtaar, 1983).
Chanchal received industry recognition including the Filmfare Award for Best Male Playback Singer in 1973. Other honours noted in his career include the Raj Kapoor Memorial Award and a Shobhna Award for stage singing, both cited for contributions to Indian music and performance.
He continued to record and perform into later years; his last released song listed is "Kitho aaya corona?" in 2020. His devotional recording "Jai Mata Di" featured in the 2017 film Badrinath Ki Dulhania, reflecting the lasting presence of his bhajans in popular culture.
Public profile

Narendra Chanchal married Namrata Chanchal, a lyricist, on 2 February 1972. They had three children: two sons, Siddharth (also known as Bobby) and Mohit (also known as Appu), and a daughter, Kapila Puri. His parents were Chet Ram Kharbanda and Kailash Vati. He came from a large family with six brothers and one sister.

Chanchal held honorary citizenship of the U.S. state of Georgia and in 2009 published an autobiography titled The Midnight Singer, which recounted his early struggles and later achievements.
