Nawaz Sharif (Politician) Biography
Nawaz Sharif is a Pakistani politician and industrialist who served three terms as Prime Minister. Born in Lahore in 1949, he rose from a family business背景
Early life and backgroundMian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif was born on 25 December 1949 in Lahore, Punjab. He comes from a Punjabi family of Kashmiri origin; his father, Muhammad Sharif, was a businessman who moved to the Punjab region before the partition and established the family’s industrial interests. Nawaz Sharif attended Saint Anthony High School and later studied at Government College University, Lahore, and the University of the Punjab. His formal education includes a bachelor of arts, a business degree and a law degree.
Career
Sharif entered politics in the mid-1970s, motivated in part by opposition to nationalisation policies that affected his family’s steel business. He joined the Pakistan Muslim League in 1976 and moved into provincial government in Punjab during the early 1980s. In 1980 he was appointed Punjab’s finance minister, and in 1985 he became chief minister of Punjab.
His rise to national office followed: Sharif was first sworn in as Prime Minister of Pakistan in 1990. After a period in opposition during the 1993–1997 government, he won a landslide election in 1997 and began a second term as prime minister. In 2013 his Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) again won the most votes in the general election, and he took office for a third term on 7 June 2013.
Throughout his career he has been identified with conservative politics centered in Punjab. He and his party faced strong political opponents over the years, including Benazir Bhutto, Ameen Faheem, and Imran Khan.
Public profile
Beyond politics, the Sharif family has longstanding business interests. Nawaz Sharif is associated with the Ittefaq Group and the Sharif Group, conglomerates with activities in steel, agriculture, transport and sugar mills. His elder family includes political figures: his brother Shehbaz Sharif has held major office in Punjab, and his daughter Maryam Nawaz is also involved in politics.
Sharif’s time in public life has included both policy initiatives and controversies. During his earlier tenure he supported scientific programs such as the Pakistan Antarctic Programme and helped establish facilities including the Jinnah Antarctic Station. His administrations also faced significant legal and political challenges. In 1999 he was convicted and sentenced in cases that included fines and imprisonment; later events included a lifetime ban from holding political office issued by Pakistan’s Supreme Court in April 2018 and a 2018 conviction in the Avenfield reference that resulted in a prison sentence and fines for him and family members.
Personal life
Nawaz Sharif is married to Kulsoom Nawaz Sharif. The couple have four children: two sons, Hassan and Hussain Nawaz Sharif, and two daughters, Maryam Nawaz and Asma Nawaz. Asma is married into a family with political connections. Sharif’s personal interests include cricket and food. He is identified as a follower of Sunni Islam.
