Early life and backgroundNayamoni Saikia was born on 21 September 1988 in Tengabari village, Golaghat district, Assam. Raised in a farming family, she completed her graduation at Golaghat Commerce College. She grew up in the same village and has remained connected to her Assamese roots throughout her sporting journey.
Career
Saikia began her early sporting life in weightlifting after being selected through a talent hunt in 2001 and joining the SAI centre in Golaghat. A leg injury eventually curtailed her weightlifting prospects and led to a switch to lawn bowls in 2007. That transition proved pivotal: within a few years she was representing Assam and then India at national and international events.
At the national level she has multiple notable results, including gold medals at the National Games and the National Lawn Bowling Championships. She won gold medals in the National Games (individual and team events) and claimed the national title in Kerala in 2015. In 2012 she took gold in the under-25 section at the Asian Lawn Bowls Championship.
Saikia has represented India at several editions of the Commonwealth Games. She competed in Glasgow in 2014 in both Women's Singles and Women's Triples. She was again part of India's squad in 2018 and returned for the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
The high point of her career came at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, when she and her teammates Lovely Choubey, Pinki Singh and Rupa Rani Tirkey won the gold medal in the women's fours. The team defeated New Zealand to reach the final and overcame South Africa in the gold-medal match on 2 August 2022, delivering a historic result for India in lawn bowls.
