Early life and background

Neel Nanda was born in 1991 in Atlanta, Georgia, to immigrant Indian parents. Growing up in Atlanta, he developed a taste for comedy early on and began writing jokes in high school. By the time he reached college he was performing at open-mic nights, having filled notebooks with material he crafted while still a teenager.

Career

Nanda moved to Los Angeles in 2013 to pursue stand-up full time and soon became a fixture on the city's comedy circuit. He worked stages at venues including The Laugh Factory, The Comedy Store, The Improv, The Ice House and others, and also performed at Just For Laughs. He toured nationally alongside fellow comedians such as Adam DeVine, Ron Funches, Eric Andre and Iliza Shlesinger.

On television, Nanda made his late-night debut on ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live! in 2015 with a set that touched on his upbringing, relationships and ambitions. He went on to appear on a string of comedy programs: IFC’s Garfunkel and Oates in 2014, Comedy Central’s Adam Devine’s House Party in 2016 where he played a character called Lil Neel, MTV’s Acting Out in 2016, and a Viceland Flophouse segment. He recorded a stand-up special for Hulu’s Coming to the Stage in 2017 and appeared on Amazon Prime’s Inside Joke in 2018.

Beyond television, Nanda hosted a weekly show titled “Unnecessary Evil” at the Westside Comedy Theater in Los Angeles, maintaining a presence in both the club scene and media projects.
