Neelakanti Patekar, often called Neelu, was born in Pune, Maharashtra. She completed a Bachelor of Science degree in physics from the University of Pune and later moved to Mumbai. Early in her working life she was employed in banking.

Career

Neelu has a long association with Marathi performing arts. She won a gold medal for Best Actress at the Maharashtra State Drama Competition in 1973, an early recognition of her stage work. Her recorded screen debut came on television with the series Man Vadhay Vadhay in 1986, and she entered Marathi cinema with the film Atmavishwas (Aatmavishwas) in 1989. That film earned her a Best Actress award from the Government of Maharashtra the same year.

Her screen work has continued in later decades. In 2016 she appeared on Marathi television in the serial Goth playing the role of Bayo Ajji, and she acted in the Marathi film Bernie that year. Beyond acting, Neelakanti has worked as a producer on a number of short films, serving as executive producer on projects such as Beginning of End, Struggle and Journey of Life. She is also credited with roles behind the camera as a director and producer.
