Early life and background

Neelam Kothari was born on 9 November 1967 in Hong Kong. She spent her childhood in Hong Kong, attended Island School there, and later moved with her family to Bangkok. Her family background is described as Gujarati-Iranian. From a young age she trained in jazz and ballet dance and learned to play the keyboard.

Career

Neelam entered Hindi films after being spotted while on holiday in Mumbai. Her screen debut came in 1984 with the film Jawaani, in which she played the character Sanam. Although that first film did not make a major commercial impact, she continued to be cast in a series of films through the 1980s and 1990s.

Throughout the late 1980s Neelam appeared in titles such as Andaz Pyar Ka (1986), Khudgarz (1987), Khatron Ke Khiladi (1988), Sindoor (1988), and Gharana (1989). She gained wider recognition for her role as Kiran in the 1989 film Ghar Ka Chiraag. Her filmography from the following decade includes appearances in Agneepath (1990), Indrajeet (1991), Santaan (1995), Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), and Hum Saath Saath Hain (1999).

In 2001 Neelam stepped away from acting and transitioned into jewellery design. She established herself in that field and in 2011 opened a retail outlet called Neelam Kothari Fine Jewels in Mumbai. Her work in jewellery has been recognized with awards that include the Blackswan Award for Women Empowerment, the Iconic Achievers Award for Most Promising Jeweller of The Year, and the Global Spa Fit and Fab Jeweller Award, all noted in 2019.
