Early life and background

Neena Gupta was born on 4 June 1959 in Delhi. She grew up in a family headed by R. N. Gupta and Shakuntala Gupta and attended The Lawrence School, Sanawar in Himachal Pradesh. Her higher education includes a Master’s degree and an M.Phil in Sanskrit. She trained at the National School of Drama, completing a three-year course that concluded in 1982.

Career

Gupta launched her film career in 1982 with a role in Saath Saath and appeared in a number of notable Hindi films through the 1980s and early 1990s, including Gandhi (1982), Mandi (1983), Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron (1983), Rihaee (1988), Swarg (1990) and Drishti (1990). She has also worked in Malayalam cinema with credits in Vasthuhara (1991) and Aham (1992).

On television, she made an early mark with the serial Khandaan in 1985 and went on to act in many other series, among them Daddy (1989), Drishti (1990), Saans (1999), Siski (2000), Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin (2004) and Kitani Mohabbat Hai (2009). In 1999 she expanded her role behind the camera, directing the TV serial Saans and hosting the Star Plus game show Kamzor Kadi Kaun the same year.

Her career experienced a resurgence in the late 2010s. She was widely praised for her performance in the 2018 film Badhaai Ho, which led to further film work including Music Teacher (2019), The Last Color (2019), Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan (2020), and 83 (2020). Other recent film appearances include Alone (2015), Veere Di Wedding (2018) and Mulk (2018).

Gupta has also tried her hand at other creative projects: she released a pop album titled Go To Court in 1997 and wrote the script for the Hindi web series Kehne Ko Humsafar Hain in 2018. She has acted in and been featured in a variety of commercials and magazine covers over the years.

Other accolades include the 1999 Screen Award for Best Actress for Saans, and Filmfare Awards in 2019 for Best Actress and Best Actress (Critics) for Badhaai Ho.
