Neeraj Chopra was born on 24 December 1997 in the village of Khandra in Haryana. He grew up in a farming family as the eldest child among four siblings. As a child he struggled with his weight and experienced teasing from peers, which affected his confidence. His family encouraged him to take up sport, and his training began at the Panipat stadium where he started running to lose weight.

An early turning point came when a senior athlete, Jaiveer Chaudhary, asked him to try the javelin. Neeraj’s first throw impressed his senior and convinced him to focus on the event. That moment shifted his attitude and ambition, and he decided to pursue javelin as his career.

Career

Neeraj moved to Panchkula at age 14 to access better training facilities and joined a sports nursery to train with other young athletes. He continued to win national competitions and, in 2014, took gold at the Youth Olympic Games in Bangkok, his first international title.

The injury required surgery and forced him to miss the 2019 World Championships as he focused on rehabilitation. With limited time to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics, he committed fully to recovery, emphasizing diet, workouts and disciplined rehabilitation.

To prepare for Olympic qualification he trained in South Africa under the guidance of biomechanics expert Klaus Bartonietz and returned to competition in January 2020, winning a meeting with a throw of 87.86 metres and securing an Olympic qualifying mark. The pandemic disrupted his preparation: travel and visa issues, training interruptions, and restricted facilities made the build-up difficult. Despite that, he continued to push his limits, breaking his own national record with an 88.07-metre throw on 5 March.

Once international travel resumed, Neeraj and his coach trained in Europe, and he won a gold in Paris in 2021 with a throw of 83.18 metres. On 7 August 2021, combining years of disciplined daily work and careful technical refinement, he won the Olympic gold medal for India in javelin, becoming the first Indian to do so in that event.
