Early life and backgroundNeeraj Kabi was born on 12 March 1968 in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand. Raised in that city, he attended Loyola School, Jamshedpur, and later studied at Symbiosis College in Pune. His early interests included film and performance, though he only began acting seriously while participating in college theatre.
Kabi trained himself in multiple movement and performance disciplines, learning various dance forms and martial arts to support his work as an actor. A formative setback came in 1990 when he was not selected by the National School of Drama; he then developed his craft largely through self-directed study and stage practice.
Career
Kabi’s stage work predates his on-screen career. He founded Pravah Theatre Laboratory in 1996 and has served as its artistic director. From the 1990s onward he organized theatre workshops for actors, animators, schools, colleges, corporate groups and teachers, and has worked as an acting coach and corporate trainer. His theatre credits include productions such as Macbeth (1998), The Game of Love and Chance (2001), Lady with Lapdog (2003), Gates to India Song (2013) and The Father (2017).
His screen debut came with the National Award-winning film Shesha Drushti (The Last Vision) in 1997. Kabi returned to broader attention with the 2012 film Ship of Theseus, in which he played an Indian monk; for that role he significantly changed his physical appearance. The film received national and international recognition, including the National Film Award for Best Feature Film.
On television and in streaming work, Kabi has portrayed a range of historical and fictional figures. He played Mahatma Gandhi in the Rajya Sabha TV series Samvidhaan: The Making of the Constitution of India (2014). He has appeared in the English-language film Gandhi of the Month (2014) opposite Harvey Keitel and was part of the cast of Viceroy’s House (2016) and The Hungry (2017). In 2015 he appeared in Talvar, playing the father of the central character.
Kabi reached a wider mainstream audience through high-profile Indian web series and international projects. His credits include Sacred Games (2018), The Final Call (2019), Taj Mahal (2019) and Paatal Lok (2020). He also appeared in the films Hichki (2018) and The Field (2018). In the 2023 feature Sam Bahadur he portrayed Jawaharlal Nehru.
