Neha Kakkar was born on 6 June 1988 in Rishikesh, Uttarakhand. She grew up in a lower-middle-class household; her father sold samosas to support the family. From an early age Neha and her siblings—sister Sonu and brother Tony—performed at jagratas (religious gatherings) to help with household expenses. The income from these performances was modest, sometimes just a small fee per night, but they gave the children early exposure to singing and live audiences.

When Sonu began getting more singing opportunities, the family moved to Delhi so the siblings could pursue a larger stage. In Delhi the three of them continued performing at jagratas, and Neha learned much of her craft by singing alongside her sister rather than through formal lessons.
