Early life and background

Nehal Wadhera was born on 4 September 2000 in Sarabha Nagar, Ludhiana, Punjab. He grew up in Ludhiana and attended Sacred Heart Convent School in Sarabha Nagar through the 10th grade before moving to B. C. M. Arya Model Sr. Sec. School for 11th and 12th. He went on to pursue his graduation at Satish Chander Dhawan Government College in Ludhiana. Wadhera began playing cricket around the age of nine and developed through the coaching structure of the Ludhiana District Cricket Association.

Career

Wadhera progressed through Punjab age-group sides, representing Punjab Under-16 and Under-19 teams. In the 2017–18 season he featured in tournaments such as the Vijay Merchant Trophy and the Cooch Behar Trophy, where he compiled notable run tallies. He earned selection for India at the Under-19 level in 2018, making an 82-run contribution on debut against Sri Lanka on 17 July 2018 and participating in two Under-19 Asia Cup campaigns.

At domestic level he has represented a range of teams including Ludhiana Under-23 and the Punjab senior side. In 2021 he produced a tournament-high score of 171 in the JP Attray Memorial National ODI Tournament playing for Mumbai XI. The following year he produced an extraordinary innings of 578 runs for Ludhiana Under-23 against Bathinda Under-23, facing 414 deliveries and striking 79 boundaries, a performance that drew attention for its scale and scoring rate.

Wadhera made his Ranji Trophy debut on 3 January 2023 against Gujarat, where he scored a century (123). He later made a double-century in the format with a 214-run innings against Madhya Pradesh.

In the Indian Premier League auction of December 2022, Mumbai Indians bought Wadhera at his base price. He made his IPL debut on 2 April 2023 against Royal Challengers Bangalore, scoring 21 off 13 balls and notably clearing the ropes with a long six measured at 101 meters. During the 2023 season he developed a reputation as a power hitter who could provide quick, valuable runs in pressure situations: when Mumbai Indians were in precarious positions he contributed impactful knocks, including a 40 off 21 balls in a chase against Gujarat Titans and a maiden T20 half-century of 64 off 51 balls against Chennai Super Kings.

Public profile

Wadhera bats left-handed and bowls right-arm legbreak. He has been coached by Charanjit Bhangu and Harjinder Singh during his development.
