Early life and background

Neil Peter Currey was born on 15 November 1988 in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England. He studied health and fitness at the University of Bath, completing a foundation degree between 2007 and 2009. Raised in a family that included his parents, Peter and Sandra Currey, and a sister, Rachel, Currey would later return to his hometown area. He identified as British and was raised in the Christian faith.

Career

Currey began working in fitness as a teenager. At 16 he left Sheffield for London and took a role as a personal trainer at a Fitness First gym. He progressed rapidly: by 19 he had stepped into a temporary manager role during a colleague’s paternity leave and went on to become an area manager responsible for six London gyms. Those sites were reported to generate collective annual profits of £3.5 million while he oversaw operations.

After that period of club management he moved into an operations director role with a boutique company, and later shifted his focus into competitive bodybuilding and coaching. Around age 27 he made major personal changes to pursue professional bodybuilding full time, selling assets including a London penthouse and a G-Wagon and moving to live with his mother to focus on training.

Currey competed across multiple contests and gradually climbed through the ranks. In 2017 he placed fifth in his first pro muscle category appearance at the World Championships. In 2018 he earned his Pro Card by winning first place in Men’s Classic Physique – Class C at the NPC Worldwide Amateur Olympia Italy. Between 2019 and 2022 he took part in numerous professional shows: he placed seventh at both the Yamamoto Pro Cup and the Kuwait Pro and ninth at the Europa Pro in 2019; in 2021 he finished second at the Tampa Pro and third at both the Puerto Rico Pro and the Xtreme Bodybuilding & Fitness Pro in the Men’s Classic Physique division.

In 2022 Currey won the New York Pro, a result that led to his IFBB Pro status. He also competed at the 2022 Mr. Olympia in the Classic Physique division, where he placed 16th. After the 2022 Olympia he embarked on a substantial mass-gaining phase, increasing his weight by roughly 42 pounds over about four months, moving from approximately 215 to 257 pounds as he targeted open bodybuilding.

Coaching, training and business

Alongside competing, Currey coached clients through in-person and online programs. He described a highly regimented daily routine in interviews: waking very early for multiple daily training sessions and cardio, eating six meals, and responding to clients’ messages in the pre-dawn hours. His diet centered on staples such as beef, rice and potatoes and he used specific supplements to meet protein and performance needs. In May 2020 he launched a merchandise brand called Machine Mentality, offering T-shirts and hoodies. In November 2022 he became a sponsored athlete with the Hosstile athlete management company.

Currey worked with well-known coaches in the sport. For the 2022 New York Pro he trained under Milos Sarcev and later with coach Ben Chow. His professional affiliations and sponsorships reflected his transition from classic physique into ambitions toward open bodybuilding.

Physically, Currey was listed at about 1.78 m (5 ft 10 in) and around 115 kg (254 lb) during parts of his competitive career, with reported body measurements including a 52-inch chest and 19-inch biceps. Neil Currey died on 11 September 2023 in South Yorkshire at the age of 34. His former coach shared the news publicly on Instagram on the date of his passing. An initial post included a reference to suicide and mental health, but that reference was later removed and the cause of death remained unconfirmed in subsequent public notices.
