Early life and backgroundNewton Leroy McPherson, known as Newt Gingrich, was born on June 17, 1943, in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He was raised primarily in Hummelstown and on military bases after his mother remarried an Army officer who adopted him. As a youth he moved with his family to Georgia during his junior year of high school and later completed undergraduate studies in history at Emory University. Gingrich went on to earn both a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in European history from Tulane University, where his doctoral work included research in Brussels related to Belgian education policy in the Congo.
Career
Gingrich began his professional life in academia, joining the faculty at West Georgia College in 1970 as an assistant professor in the history department. He later worked in the college’s geography department and helped establish an interdisciplinary environmental studies program before leaving academia to pursue elected office.
He first ran for Congress in Georgia’s 6th congressional district in 1974 and after an unsuccessful bid in 1976, won the seat in 1978. Gingrich was re-elected multiple times and rose to national prominence as a leader of the Republican effort that culminated in the party’s taking control of the House in the 1994 midterm elections. Following that victory, he became the first Republican Speaker of the House in forty years. During his congressional career he took a prominent role in efforts surrounding the impeachment of President Bill Clinton in 1998. Gingrich left Congress in 1999.
After leaving elected office, Gingrich pursued business and media projects. He founded several for-profit ventures and, in 2007, established Gingrich Productions, a company led by his wife Callista. The production company has produced historical documentaries and other media projects; in 2010 it released the documentary Nine Days that Changed the World. Gingrich has also authored and co-authored numerous non-fiction books, with a publishing record that stretches back to the early 1980s.
Political campaigns
Gingrich sought the Republican presidential nomination on more than one occasion. He explored a run for the 2008 nomination and later announced a campaign for the GOP nomination for president in 2012, suspending that campaign in May 2012 and endorsing Mitt Romney.
Public profile
Gingrich’s public profile has combined scholarship, political leadership and media entrepreneurship. He is widely identified with the Republican Party and with the “Republican Revolution” that reshaped House politics in the 1990s. Outside of politics he has described interests that include reading and writing; he has long taken an interest in history and science and is known to be a dinosaur enthusiast.
Personal life and family
Gingrich has been married multiple times. His marriages include Jackie Battley, Marianne Ginther and, since August 2000, Callista Bisek, who has played a central role in his post-congressional media work. He has two daughters, Kathy Lubbers and Jackie Gingrich Cushman. His background includes a blended family and half-siblings. Raised in a Christian tradition, his faith affiliation later changed from Southern Baptist to Roman Catholicism.
Physical profile and other details
Gingrich is approximately 6 feet 2½ inches tall (about 190 cm) and his weight has been listed around 92 kg (203 lbs). His eye color is hazel and his hair is described as white in later years. Ethnically, he has German, Scottish and Irish ancestry.
