After the death of his father, Bindumadhav Thackeray, his mother Madhavi Thackeray raised him and his sister Neha largely outside the immediate family household.

He attended Bombay Scottish School in Mumbai and then studied at Narsee Monjee College of Commerce and Economics from 2005 to 2007. He later completed law studies at Government Law College (GLC) in Mumbai, where he pursued the integrated BLS LLB course from 2007 to 2012. In 2011 he completed a course in International Commercial Litigation at the London School of Economics and Political Science.

Career

Nihar Thackeray became a member of the Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa in 2012 and began practising law. From September 2010 to October 2014 he worked as an attorney at Jayakar & Partners. He then practised at Legasis Partners between January 2015 and April 2017.

In August 2017 he founded Vis Legis Law Practice Advocates, a firm that brought together lawyers from across India. His practice spans civil and criminal matters, real estate, insolvency and bankruptcy, arbitration, securities and company law litigation, and related documentation. He has represented the Securities and Exchange Board of India before the Securities Appellate Tribunal and has acted for corporates in international commercial arbitration matters, including clients from the UAE and Israel.

Outside private practice, Nihar serves on the boards of several companies, including Bombay Motels Pvt Ltd, Bindatone Private Limited (where his mother is also a director), and Ssterling Workforce Enterprises Private Limited.

In March 2011 a human trafficking case was registered against Nihar following a police raid at a Santacruz bar where several women were rescued; authorities alleged the venue was operating on property linked to him. The investigation did not produce conclusive evidence, and he was later acquitted.
