Nikhat Zareen Biography

Nikhat Zareen was born on 14 June 1996 in Nizamabad district, Telangana. Raised in a supportive family, she attended Nirmala Hrudaya Girls High School in Nizamabad and went on to complete a Bachelor of Arts at AV College in Hyderabad.

Early life and background

Nikhat Zareen was born on 14 June 1996 in Nizamabad district, Telangana. Raised in a supportive family, she attended Nirmala Hrudaya Girls High School in Nizamabad and went on to complete a Bachelor of Arts at AV College in Hyderabad. Her father, Mohammad Jameel Ahmed, who worked abroad for many years before returning to support his daughters’ sporting and educational ambitions, played an active role in Nikhat’s early training and development.

Nikhat grew interested in boxing at a young age. After finishing her eighth grade final exams she trained with her father for a year and later joined the Sports Authority of India centre in Visakhapatnam, where she was coached by IV Rao. Her determination to prove that girls can compete in boxing motivated her commitment to the sport.

Career

Nikhat competes in the flyweight category and has represented India at numerous international events across junior, youth and senior levels. She first made her mark by winning the AIBA Women’s Junior and Youth World Boxing Championship in Antalya in 2011. Over the following years she collected medals at major tournaments, including gold at the Nations Cup in Novi Sad (2014) and medals at events such as the Youth World Championship (silver, 2014), national championships and multiple international tournaments.

Her career continued with podium finishes at the Strandja Memorial and other international fixtures. In 2019 she won gold at the Strandja Memorial in Sofia and took silver at the Thailand Open. She also earned bronze at the Asian Championships (2019) and at other multi-nation tournaments.

A significant milestone came in 2022 when Nikhat won the gold medal in the 52 kg category at the IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships in Istanbul by defeating Jutamas Jitpong of Thailand. That victory made her one of the Indian women boxers to claim world championship gold. Later the same year she added a Strandja Memorial gold in Sofia, defeating experienced opponents including a three-time European medallist in that tournament, and recorded a notable win over Tokyo Olympic medallist Buse Naz Çakıroğlu in the semifinals of that event.

In 2023 she continued to strengthen her record, winning gold at the IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships held in New Delhi and becoming the first Indian boxer since Mary Kom to claim two world championship golds.

Nikhat has also been part of national schemes and private support structures: she has been associated with the Target Olympic Podium Scheme and received backing from corporate partners. Since 2018 she has been a brand ambassador for Adidas and has been supported by the Welspun group for training. In recognition of her performances, she was appointed as a staff officer at the Bank of India zonal office in Hyderabad in June 2021.

Public profile

Nikhat maintains an active public presence. She is known for sharing training and fitness content on social media and has been featured on magazine covers. Her social media following includes thousands of followers on Instagram and Facebook. She is a vocal fitness enthusiast and often posts workout photos and personal moments, including images of her pet cat.

Her family background features strong sporting connections: two elder sisters are doctors, while her younger sister has competed nationally in badminton. Boxing runs in the wider family as well; her cousins have been national-level boxers.

Awards and recognition

Nikhat’s achievements have been recognised at the state and national level. She was named brand ambassador of her hometown, received awards such as the New Indian Express DEVI Award in 2016, and earned honours from state sports authorities, including a ceremonial vehicle and a cash award for her contributions.

Latest updates

Recent highlights include her world championship success in 2022 and another world title performance in 2023 in New Delhi. She remains active in international competition and continues to represent India in the flyweight division while engaging with sponsors and national sports programmes.

Personal notes

Nikhat follows a non-vegetarian diet, enjoys dishes such as biryani and nihari, and drives a Mahindra Thar gifted to her following a major championship victory. She is unmarried and practices Islam. Her father remains a close presence in her sporting life, travelling to tournaments and helping manage her training and diet.
