Early life and backgroundNikhila Vimal was born on 10 March 1994 in Alakode, Kannur, Kerala. Raised in Taliparamba, she completed a B.Sc. in Botany from Sir Syed College, Taliparamba. Her mother, Kalamandalam Vimaladevi, is a dancer and the family surname Vimal is derived from her. Her father M. R. Pavithran worked in the statistical department and passed away in 2020. Nikhila has a sister, Akhila Vimal, who is a research scholar in theatre arts at Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi.
Nikhila received training in several classical dance styles including Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi and Kerala Natanam, and she learned mono act while in college. She had an early interest in performing and began acting during her school years.
Career
Nikhila's on-screen debut came as a child actor in the television documentary-fiction series St. Alphonsa: The Passion Flower (2008), which aired on Shalom TV; she played the young Saint Alphonsa. Her first film appearance was a supporting role in the Malayalam feature Bhagyadevatha (2009). She later took on her first lead film role in Love 24x7 (2015).
She has worked across Malayalam, Tamil and Telugu cinema. Her first Tamil release was Vetrivel (2016), and she appeared in the Tamil films Kidaari (2016), Panjumittai (released 2018), Thambi (2019), Ranga (2022) and Por Thozhil (2023). In Telugu, she made her debut with Meda Meeda Abbayi (2017) and later played the title role in Gayatri (2018).
In Malayalam cinema, notable projects include Aravindante Athidhikal (2018) in which she played the lead Varada opposite Vineeth Sreenivasan, Njan Prakashan (2018) where she portrayed Salomi, and later films such as Mera Naam Shaji (2019), Anjaam Pathiraa (2020), The Priest (2021), Jo and Jo (2022) and Ayalvaashi (2023), in which she played the role of Celine.
Beyond films, Nikhila has appeared in telefilms such as Thapaswini Vishudha Euphrasia (2016) and worked as a television host for the cookery show Tharapachakam on Flowers TV in 2016. She has also done commercials, including campaigns for Rajakumari Gold and Diamonds, and has been featured on magazine covers such as Vanitha and Grihalakshmi.
