Early life and backgroundNikita Jacob was born in 1991 and grew up in Mumbai, India. She attended St. Joseph's Convent School in Panchgani and later St. Xavier's Junior College in Mumbai. For higher education she studied law at ILS Law College, Pune, where she completed a B.S.L. LL.B and also earned diplomas in Human Rights & International Law (2010) and in Corporate Laws (2011).
Career
Jacob enrolled with the Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa in 2013 and became registered to practice at the Bombay High Court in 2015. Early in her professional life she worked with several law firms in Mumbai. Her positions included stints at SK Legal Associates (April 2015 to November 2016) and Tatva Legal (November 2016 to April 2017). From August 2017 through November 2020 she worked under advocate Girish Godbole at the Bombay High Court, gaining experience across civil and commercial litigation.
As an advocate, Jacob has combined courtroom practice with human rights and environmental activism. She has been involved in public-interest work since college, where she volunteered with the NGO Make A Difference between 2008 and 2010 and participated in her college human rights cell. Those formative experiences helped shape her interest in social welfare and legal advocacy.
Public profile
Jacob received wider public attention in early 2021 when Delhi Police named her in connection with a document widely referred to as a "toolkit" that related to farmers' protests. In February 2021 police carried out a raid at her Mumbai residence and later issued a non-bailable arrest warrant in mid-January 2021, charging her under provisions that included sedition, promoting enmity between groups, and criminal conspiracy. Jacob challenged the matter in the Bombay High Court and was granted pre-arrest interim bail for three weeks.
Jacob responded to police questioning by describing the toolkit as an informational document that did not promote violence, arguing that it was meant to increase awareness about the farmers' situation and was lawful in a democratic context. The public controversy around the toolkit also involved comments about international sharing of the document by other activists.
Beyond legal practice and activism, Jacob participated in a readathon campaign during the COVID-19 lockdown in India. In April 2020 a video of her reading an excerpt from Rabindranath Tagore's Kabuliwala was posted by a national publication as part of a drive to encourage reading while people were confined at home.

Jacob is multilingual: she is fluent in English, Hindi, and Malayalam, and has basic proficiency in French. In addition to her academic pursuits, she was an active sportsperson during school and college, competing in games such as table tennis, handball, throwball, volleyball, carrom, and hockey. Her LinkedIn profile notes extracurricular interests in art, media, music, and sports.
