Nikki Haley Biography
Nimrata "Nikki" Randhawa Haley is an American politician, former governor of South Carolina and former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. Born in Bamg
Early life and backgroundNimrata Randhawa Haley, known publicly as Nikki Haley, was born on January 20, 1972, in Bamberg, South Carolina. Raised in a family that ran a clothing business, she took on responsibilities early: by age 13 she was keeping the store's accounts and later helped expand the family enterprise. Haley attended Orangeburg Preparatory Schools and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting from Clemson University.
Haley was born into an Indian Sikh family and later embraced Christianity, identifying as Methodist. Her family gave her the nickname "Nikki," and she spent her formative years in South Carolina, where she remains based.
Career
Haley entered electoral politics in 2004 when she ran for a seat in the South Carolina House of Representatives representing a Lexington County district. Her victory that year made her the first Indian-American to hold that office. She was re-elected in 2006 without opposition and again defeated a Democratic challenger in 2008.
In 2010 Haley won the governorship of South Carolina, becoming the state's first Indian-American governor and, at the time, the youngest person to hold the office. She was re-elected in 2014 by a wide margin. Haley resigned as governor on January 24, 2017, to accept an appointment as the United States ambassador to the United Nations, a post she left on December 31, 2018.
After serving at the United Nations, Haley remained active in national politics. She indicated interest in a presidential bid in mid-2022 and formally launched a campaign for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination on February 14, 2023. During the 2024 primary season she lost the South Carolina Republican primary on February 24, 2024. She also won the Republican primary in Washington, D.C., on March 4, 2024.
Public profile
Haley's public life has included both policy initiatives and moments of controversy. As governor she advocated for removing the Confederate Battle Flag from the South Carolina Statehouse in 2015. Her time in public office has involved ethical scrutiny at times; in 2013 the State Ethics Commission issued a fine and warning related to reporting issues from her 2010 gubernatorial campaign. She has also published a memoir, Can’t Is Not an Option: My American Story (2012), and has been associated with the Tea Party movement.
Her tenure as a national figure has included sharp exchanges with political opponents. During debate and campaign events in the 2023–2024 cycle she engaged in heated confrontations with fellow Republican contenders.
Personal life
Nikki Haley is married to Michael Haley, an officer in the South Carolina Army National Guard. The couple has two children, a daughter named Rena and a son named Nalin. Her parents are Ajit Singh Randhawa (who died in 2024) and Raj Kaur Randhawa. She has siblings who have pursued varied careers, including military service and work in media and web design.
Haley lists reading and traveling among her personal interests. She has maintained residence in Columbia, South Carolina.
