Early life and background

Nina Singh was born Nina Rani on 11 July 1964 in Darbhanga, Bihar. She is the eldest of seven children, with three brothers and three sisters. Her father, Ganesh Lal Das, served in the Bihar government as an Additional Director General; her mother also worked as a civil servant. Nina completed her schooling in Bihar and went on to earn a BA from Patna Women’s College and an MA from Jawaharlal Nehru University. She later attended the Harvard Kennedy School for a Master in Public Administration and completed a Police Executive Programme at Cambridge University. She was also associated briefly with the Delhi School of Economics before taking up police training.

Career

Nina Singh joined the Indian Police Service in the 1989 batch and completed her training at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy on 21 August 1989. She was initially allotted the Manipur cadre and served in various district-level responsibilities there. After marriage she was transferred to the Rajasthan cadre, where she has held a succession of senior roles across state and central assignments.

Within Rajasthan, her designations have included Additional Director General (Training), Inspector General (Planning and Welfare), Inspector General of the Ajmer Range, Deputy Inspector General of the Jaipur Range, and Acting Additional Director General and Additional Director General of the Rajasthan Police. She also served as Secretary of the Rajasthan State Women’s Commission and led an outreach program that organized hearings across districts to give women a forum to raise concerns.

On deputation to central agencies, Nina Singh served as Joint Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation from 2013 to 2018, where she worked on a number of high-profile investigations. She later moved to the Central Industrial Security Force and held roles including Additional Director General of the CISF, Special Director General of the CISF, Director General-in-Charge, and, in December 2023, Director General of the CISF. Her appointment as DG marked the first time a woman has led the paramilitary force; she is scheduled to hold the post until her retirement on 31 July 2024.

Her public service record is recognized by multiple honors: she has received the Police Medal (2005), the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service (2014), the President’s Police Medal (2015), the Ati Utkrisht Seva Medal (2020), the Indira Gandhi Priyadarshini Award, the Nari Shakti Samman, and the Police Medal for Meritorious Service.
