Nirmala Channapa was born on 21 June 1987 in Bangalore, Karnataka. She grew up in a middle-class family in the city and developed an early interest in sports, taking part in her school kabaddi team. She trained with the Benaka troupe founded by T. S. Nagabharana and later took a three-month acting course at Rangayana.
