Nirmala Sitharaman was born on 18 August 1959 in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, and grew up in a Tamil Brahmin family that moved across the state due to her father's transferable job in the railways. She completed college at Seethalakshmi Ramaswamy College in Tiruchirappalli and went on to Jawaharlal Nehru University, earning a master's degree in economics and later a PhD focused on Indo-European textile trades.

Her upbringing combined a disciplined household environment with a strong exposure to reading and books. She has described interests in reading and writing, listening to classical music and cooking. After the 2019 general election she was appointed Cabinet Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs, becoming the first full-time woman to serve as India’s Finance Minister. Sitharaman set a parliamentary record by presenting seven consecutive budgets, surpassing the previous streak held by Morarji Desai.
