Nithin Kamath Biography

Nithin Kamath is an Indian entrepreneur, trader and investor best known as the co-founder and CEO of Zerodha, one of India’s largest retail brokerage firms

Early life and background
Nithin Kamath was born on 5 October 1979 in Shimoga, Karnataka, and grew up in that hometown. He completed his schooling at Dayal Singh Public School in Shimoga and studied engineering at Bangalore Institute of Technology, graduating after the 1997–2001 period. His parents are Raghuram Kamath, who retired from Canara Bank, and Revathi Kamath, an environmentalist and Veena player. He has a younger brother, Nikhil Kamath, who later became his business partner.

Career
Kamath’s introduction to markets came early. He began trading as a freelance proprietary trader in Bangalore in January 1997 and experienced the typical ups and downs of trading, including a significant early setback that left him in debt. To recover financially he worked in a Canara Bank call centre from 2001 to 2005 and at Manipal Infocom as a senior telesales executive, all while continuing to trade on the side.

In 2004 Nithin and his brother Nikhil started Kamath Associates. The brothers went on to found Zerodha in 2010, with Nithin serving as CEO. Under his leadership Zerodha introduced pricing and product approaches that differentiated it from traditional brokers. The firm’s low-cost model and focus on product innovation attracted rapid customer growth; client numbers rose from tens of thousands to around a million users, with several hundred thousand active traders. By activity and daily trade volumes, Zerodha became one of India’s leading retail brokerages and a significant participant in the country’s retail trading ecosystem.

Alongside Zerodha, the Kamath brothers launched Rainmatter, an initiative connected to their brokerage, and they also co-founded True Beacon, an investment management firm.

Public profile
Nithin has received recognition within the Indian startup and business community. Honors listed in his career include an Emerging Entrepreneur award from the Confederation of Indian Industry and multiple industry citations for Zerodha as an emerging and retail brokerage firm. He was named among Forbes India’s 30 Under 30 in finance and featured in various business publications. Zerodha and the Kamath brothers have appeared on magazine covers and have been profiled in national business media.

Nithin is known for blending a hands-on product focus with a broader goal of expanding India’s capital markets by enabling more domestic participation. He has spoken about how policy and technological shifts—such as wider use of Aadhaar and the effects of demonetization—contributed to a growth in retail participation in markets and helped platforms like Zerodha scale.

Personal life
Nithin married Seema Patil, whom he met while working at the call centre where they were colleagues. They married in 2008 and have a son, Kiaan Kamath. Seema has worked at Zerodha. Nithin is a sports and music enthusiast: he plays guitar, enjoys basketball, cycling, running, swimming, poker and snooker, and is a football fan. He keeps a regular gym routine and has been open about personal experiences tied to his family: in 2022 he publicly discussed his wife’s breast cancer diagnosis and showed support during her treatment.

He lists Market Wizards by Jack Schwager among his favourite books and Pink Floyd as a favourite band. Nithin has a visible interest in dogs and had a pet named Hobes. He has a few tattoos and collects cars, including an Audi A7.

Latest updates
Zerodha continued to be recognized within industry rankings and award lists over the 2010s, and by 2020 was featured on IIFL Wealth Hurun lists highlighting self-made individuals under 40. In 2023 Nithin and his brother were listed among global billionaires, reflecting the scale Zerodha reached under their stewardship.

Kamath remains active in building product-led financial services and in public conversations about broadening India’s investor base and improving the capital markets ecosystem.
