Early life and background

Nitin Agrawal was born on 27 July 1966 in Delhi. He grew up in the capital and completed a strong technical and academic grounding before joining the civil services. Agrawal earned a B.Tech in Civil Engineering followed by an M.Tech from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, and later completed an M.Phil. in Social Science from Panjab University. He cleared the Union Public Service Commission examination in 1989 and trained at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy.

Career

Agrawal began his professional life briefly outside the police service, working for about a year as an assistant engineer at the Institution of Railway Signal Engineers (IRSE) in 1989. After entering the Indian Police Service in 1989 and being allotted the Kerala cadre, he progressed through a series of operational and training roles across central and state security forces.

His postings have included Deputy Inspector General in the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), Inspector General in the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), and Inspector General in the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP). While with ITBP he rose to the rank of Additional Director General and served as Inspector General (IG) Training, overseeing a wide range of training programs and associated organizational and legal issues.

In July 2015 Agrawal returned to Kerala Police as Additional Director General, where his responsibilities included management of police communication and wireless systems, oversight of crime data collection and analysis, and supervision of the Finger Print Bureau.

He also served with the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in senior leadership for about five years, including roles as Additional Director General (ADG) of Operations and ADG of the Central Zone, before serving as Director General of the CRPF.

On 14 June 2023, following approval by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, Nitin Agrawal assumed charge as the 31st Director General of the Border Security Force. His appointment was made at pay Level 16 of the government pay matrix and was to continue until his date of superannuation on 31 July 2026 or until further orders. He succeeded an acting Director General who had held the post after a previous retirement.
