Early life and background

Nitin Chandrakant Desai was born on 6 August 1965 in Dapoli, Maharashtra. He grew up in Mulund, Mumbai, and attended Wamanrao Muranjan High School. He went on to study photography at the J. J. School of Art and at L.S. Raheja School of Arts in Mumbai. Desai’s upbringing and formal training in visual arts provided the foundation for a career focused on three‑dimensional design and large cinematic environments.

Career

Desai began working at Mumbai’s Film City Studios in May 1987, initially in still photography before shifting to art direction and production design. Early in his career he worked as an assistant to established art director Nitish Roy on television projects, including the series Chanakya, where he moved from assistant to leading the show as an independent art director after the 25th episode. His first credited film art‑direction job was Bhookamp (1993). The period that followed included breakthrough work on films such as 1942: A Love Story, which brought wider recognition.

Over the years Desai built a reputation for elaborate period sets and immersive production design. He worked on many high‑profile Bollywood films, including Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Lagaan, Devdas, Swades, Jodhaa Akbar and Panipat. His work also extended to international projects; he created sets for the Oscar‑winning Slumdog Millionaire, including one of the show’s Kaun Banega Crorepati sets.

Desai branched into producing and directing as well. He produced his first film, Desh Devi Maa Ashapura, in 2003. He produced the popular Marathi historical television series Raja Shivchatrapati (2008) and later produced and directed the Marathi biopic Balgandharva (2011), in which he also performed, portraying Lokmanya Tilak. He produced the talent show Marathi Paul Padte Pudhe and created sets for television reality programming such as Bigg Boss. In 2011 he returned to acting with the Marathi film Hello Jai Hind! in a lead role.

In the digital era he continued working as a production designer, including on the 2020 Hindi web series Paurashpur for ZEE5 and ALTBalaji.

ND Studios and other ventures

In 2005 Desai established ND Studios in Karjat, a facility known for its expansive, authentic film sets. The studio grew to occupy 52 acres and attracted both domestic and international productions. Reliance Entertainment later acquired a 50 percent stake in the studio. ND Studios hosted long‑term agreements with major studios and companies, and was used for extended productions and leases.

The studio experienced notable events under Desai’s stewardship. In May 2021 a large portion of the prominent Jodhaa Akbar set at ND Studios was destroyed by fire. In April 2022 Desai reimagined parts of the complex as a Bollywood theme park featuring multiple film sets and interactive experiences, and the site also hosted a multi‑day cultural festival, Maha‑Utsav, celebrating Maharashtra’s heritage.

Awards and recognition

Desai received multiple industry awards for art direction and production design over his career. He won Screen Awards, Filmfare Awards and National Film Awards for his work on films including 1942: A Love Story, Khamoshi: The Musical, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Lagaan, Devdas and Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar. He also received IIFA and Maharashtra State Film Awards and earned an international nomination for production design.
