Nitin Mukesh Mathur was born on 27 June 1950 in Mumbai, India. He is the son of the celebrated singer Mukesh and Sarla Trivedi, and grew up in a family with several siblings. Raised in Mumbai, he attended the London School of Economics for a period, but he left his studies there and returned to India.

As a young man he initially experimented with habits that concerned his father; following his father’s advice he gave up smoking to focus on a singing career. His family life later included marriage to Nishi Mukesh and they have three children: sons Neil Nitin Mukesh and Naman Nitin Mukesh, and a daughter, Neha Mukesh.

Career

Nitin Mukesh’s professional debut as a playback singer came in 1970 with the film Mera Naam Joker. Before committing full time to singing he worked behind the camera as an assistant director to Hrishikesh Mukherjee, including on the 1973 film Namak Haraam. He also performed onstage alongside his father and other leading singers of the time.

After the death of his father in 1976, Nitin Mukesh’s singing career in films gained momentum. He was offered a song in Raj Kapoor’s Satyam Shivam Sundaram (1978), which helped establish him as a playback artist in Hindi cinema. Over the years he collaborated with a range of music directors such as Khayyam, Bappi Lahiri, Laxmikant–Pyarelal, Anand–Milind, and Rajesh Roshan, among others.

His voice was used for several leading actors of the era, including Shashi Kapoor, Manoj Kumar, Jackie Shroff and Anil Kapoor. He is also noted for singing bhajans in addition to film songs.
