Early life and background

Nitu Ghanghas was born on 19 October 2000 in Dhanana village, Bhiwani, Haryana. Raised in a family with strong roots in the area, she attended Chaudhary Bansi Lal University in Bhiwani and completed a Master of Physical Education. Her parents are Jai Bhagwan and Mukesh Devi; she has a brother named Akshit Kumar and grandparents Mangeram and Prem Devi.

Nitu grew up in a household that supported her sporting ambitions. Her father worked at the Haryana Vidhan Sabha in Chandigarh and took unpaid leave to accompany her while she pursued training, at times borrowing money to cover family expenses so she could continue boxing.

Her breakthrough at the youth level came in 2017 when she captured gold at the AIBA Youth Women's World Boxing Championships in Guwahati. The following year she continued her run of success by winning gold at the Asian Youth Boxing Championship, defeating Thailand's Nillada Meekoon.

In 2019 Nitu suffered a shoulder injury that kept her away from competition for about two years; the interruption of the Covid-19 pandemic also affected her training during this period. She returned to international competition and in 2022 won gold at the 73rd Strandja Memorial Boxing Tournament in Sofia, Bulgaria, beating Italy's Erika Prisciandaro by a 5-0 margin.

Also in 2022 Nitu defeated veteran boxer Mary Kom in a trial bout, a result that secured her a place at the 2022 Commonwealth Games. She has worked under coaches Bhaskar Bhatt and Jagdish Singh as part of her preparation and development.
