Nivedita Joshi Saraf was born on 10 January 1965 in Bombay (now Mumbai). The daughter of actor Gajan Joshi and presenter Vimal Joshi, she grew up in a family connected to the performing arts. Her father died when she was young; her mother later worked to support the family. Nivedita completed a Bachelor of Arts and grew up in Mumbai, which remains her hometown.

Career

Nivedita started working in films as a child, making an early on‑screen appearance in the 1977 Hindi film Apnapan. Over the following years she appeared in both Hindi and Marathi movies, taking a range of supporting and lead roles through the 1980s and 1990s. Her Marathi film work from that period includes Gharcha Bhedi (1984), Dhum Dhadaka (1985), Kashasathi Premasathi (1987), Kiss Bai Kiss (1988) and Balache Baap Brahmachari (1989). She later appeared as Yashoda in the 1994 Marathi drama Majha Chakula and continued to take film parts into the 2010s, including a negative role in the 2011 Marathi film Aata Ga Baya and a short role in the 2013 film We Are On! Houn Jau Dya. In 2015 she appeared in Deool Band.

Her Hindi film roles have included parts in Ardhangi (1985), Naam O Nishan (1987), Marte Dam Tak (1987), Ghar Mein Ram Gali Mein Shyam (1988), Sarvashrestha (1988), Narsimha (1991), King Uncle (supporting role) and Sar Ankhon Par (1999). Beyond screen work, she has an extensive background in Marathi theatre and has performed in plays such as Akhercha Sawall, Premachya Gava Jave, Shrimant and later productions including Hasat Khelat, Vahto Hi Durvanchi Judi, Vegal Vhayachay Mala and Sangeet Sanshay Kallol.

Television has been a significant part of her later career. She appeared on Hindi television in shows such as Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi (1984), Sapno Se Bhare Naina (2010), Phir Bhi Na Maane…Badtameez Dil (2015) and Colors’ Kesari Nandan (2019). In Marathi television she has been prominent: she played Padmini Shrikant Inamdar in Zee Marathi’s Bandhan (2006), appeared in Duheri (2016) and gained wide recognition for portraying Asavari Kulkarni in the 2019 Zee Marathi series Aggabai Sasubai. She reprised the character in the 2021 spin‑off Aggabai Sunbai and continued to work on Marathi TV with a role in Colors Marathi’s 2022 series Bhagya Dile Tu Mala.
