Early life and background

Niyati Joshi was born on 18 January 1994 in Mumbai, India. Raised in a Gujarati Brahmin family, she completed her schooling and went on to study mass communication at the University of Mumbai. She later pursued postgraduate studies in publishing, taking a Master of Arts in International Publishing at City, University of London and a Master’s in English Language and Literature at the University of Mumbai.

Career

Joshi’s professional path has focused on writing, editing and publishing. While still an undergraduate she undertook short internships that introduced her to media and creative work, including a five-day placement with a creative team at VISCOM 360 Communications and early writing for a Times Group publication. In 2010 she was among a small group of critics invited to judge films at the Mumbai Film Festival.

Her early practical experience included administrative work for Greenspot Entertainment, where she ran a Coca-Cola–sponsored IPL fan website that combined video, blog and interactive content. That site attracted significant attention during the tournament.

In 2012 Joshi relocated to London to specialise in international publishing. During and after her studies she completed internships in editorial and rights departments at Picador, SAGE Publishing and with the Susan Yearwood Literary Agency. These roles involved reading and reporting on manuscripts, programming title metadata, researching sales data, supporting rights work and helping manage social media channels. She also worked as an agent’s assistant and engaged with the London literary scene by attending events and networking opportunities.

Returning to the subcontinent, Joshi’s early editorial work included a stint at Verve Magazine where she undertook content writing, copyediting and web research. She then moved into freelance structural editing, working directly with authors to shape manuscripts.

In 2015 she joined Crossword Bookstores as a senior executive, and after nearly two years resumed freelance editorial work. By 2019 Joshi was working full time as an assistant manager for events and digital marketing at Kitab Khana Mumbai. Around this period she launched Lettori Press, an independent publishing house intended to champion diverse Indian stories and provide a platform for voices she wished to support.
