Early life and background

Noah Nirmal Tom was born on 13 November 1994 in Chakkittapara in Kozhikode district, Kerala. Raised in a family with a sporting background—his mother, Alicely Tom, is a former national handball player—Noah grew up playing outdoor games and preferred the playground to the classroom. He attended Silver Hills Public School in Kozhikode and later graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce from St. Joseph's College, Devagiri.

Noah began his organised athletic journey in the sixth standard. His school physical education teacher, Jose Sebastian, recognized his potential and encouraged him to train in athletics. In 2010 he joined the Sports Authority of India hostel in Kozhikode, where he moved from shorter sprints into a professional training environment and met coaches who influenced his shift to the 400 metres.

Career

Noah started out running 100m and 200m races before coach George P Joseph advised him to concentrate on the 400m. He recorded a notable early performance at the 56th Kerala State Junior Athletics Championship in Kochi on 13 October 2012, winning the under-18 boys 400m with a time of 48.99 seconds.

In 2014 Noah joined the Indian Air Force, where he served as a sergeant and trained under coach Raj Mohan MK. His development under structured military and coaching support helped him lower his 400m best and earn selection to national camps.

Noah has represented India on multiple international stages. He made his international debut at the Czech Athletic Championship in Mlada Boleslav and went on to compete at the 2019 World Athletics Championships in Doha as part of India’s 4x400m relay squad. At the Tokyo 2020 Olympics he ran the second leg of India’s men’s 4x400m relay; the team set an Asian record in the event, with Noah splitting approximately 45.05 seconds on his leg.

Across continental and domestic competitions Noah has earned medals in both individual and relay events. He won gold at national meets such as the National Open Athletics Championship and Service Athletic Championship in 2018, and added national-level relay and 400m titles in subsequent years. He won gold at international meets including the 5th International Balkan Relay Cup in Erzurum in 2019 and posted podium finishes at Balkan meet events and the International Sprint and Relay Cup in 2022.

Throughout 2022 Noah continued to compete frequently. He ran the Indian Grand Prix-2 in Bhubaneswar in March, clocking 46.19 seconds in the 400m, and recorded times at the Federation Cup and the National Inter State Senior Athletics Championship in April and June. In June 2022 he ran 45.83 seconds in the men’s 400m at the 7th International Sprint & Relay Cup in Erzurum.

Public profile

He lists football and basketball among his favourite sports, supports the football club Chelsea, and has named Indian sprinter Mohamad Anas Yahiya as a source of inspiration. He is unmarried and practices Christianity; he has said that he begins his day with Bible reading and prayer.

Physically, Noah is listed at approximately 1.73 m (5 ft 8 in) tall and around 67 kg (148 lbs). He has black hair and black eyes. Coaches credited with shaping his career include George P Joseph, Raj Mohan MK, and Galina Bukharina.
