Nucleya (DJ) Biography
Udyan Sagar, known professionally as Nucleya, is an Indian electronic music producer and DJ whose work blends bass-heavy electronica with Indian street and
Early life and backgroundUdyan Sagar was born on 7 December 1979 in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, and later moved with his family to Ahmedabad, Gujarat. Music was present in his household from an early age; his father kept tunes playing regularly, and that environment helped shape his interest in sound. While at school he preferred video games to studying and spent time experimenting with homemade controllers and audio mixers. During his late teens he met Mayur Narvekar, a connection that led to a long creative partnership.
Career
Sagar’s first notable musical venture was with Bandish Projekt, a project that fused Indian musical elements with electronica. Initially releasing a bootleg mix album titled Local Ahmedabad Dance Music under the name Private Sochalay, the act later evolved into Bandish Projekt and began performing beyond Ahmedabad, playing gigs in cities such as Delhi and Mumbai and eventually internationally.
After roughly 12 years with Bandish Projekt, Sagar left the group in 2007 and began rebuilding his musical identity. He adopted the stage name Nucleya and worked for several years to establish a solo career while juggling family responsibilities. His early solo breakthrough included the track Akkad Bakkad, which drew attention for its inventive use of an old nursery rhyme and a distinctive vocal tag, and helped Nucleya reach a wider audience.
Nucleya released his debut album as a composer, Pragat Pritam, in 2009. He followed that with projects that drew on Indian street sounds and bass-heavy production, culminating in the 2015 album Bass Rani. That release expanded his profile and led to bookings at major international festivals and clubs, including shows at EDC Mexico and EDC Las Vegas, as well as performances in Australia, Singapore, Dubai and other countries.
In addition to his albums, Nucleya found mainstream recognition when his song Let’s Nacho was featured in the Bollywood film Kapoor & Sons. He has also worked on projects titled Raja Baja and has been nominated for several awards; among his accolades are wins and nominations at the Global Indian Music Awards, Mirchi Music Awards, Filmfare, and a nomination for MTV Europe Music Awards’ Best Indian Act.
Nucleya’s creative output extends to collaborations with family: his son, credited as Guri Gangsta, has featured on some tracks. He and his wife Smriti Choudhary operate a creative brand called Pinksoda, which has contributed design work and visuals for Nucleya’s releases.
Public profile
On screen, Nucleya served as a judge on the streaming reality show The Remix in 2018, alongside Sunidhi Chauhan and Amit Trivedi. That role brought him further visibility in India’s music and entertainment scene. He is known for drawing inspiration from Indian streets, and for bringing regional textures and vernacular samples into electronic music.
Personal life
Nucleya is married to fashion designer Smriti Choudhary; the couple married on April 17, 2008, and had been in a long-term relationship since college. They have one son, Guri Sagar. During the period when Sagar was rebuilding his solo career, the family faced financial pressures that required Smriti to work outside the music business. Nucleya has described hobbies such as travelling and spending time with his son and family.
Style and interests
Nucleya’s public persona is tied to high-energy bass music that often incorporates local Indian sounds and motifs. He has a distinctive visual and design sensibility supported by Pinksoda, and his stage work ranges from club sets to large festival performances. He has a visible tattoo of a cassette with a discarded reel on his elbow.
Latest updates
In 2018 Nucleya expanded his reach through television by judging The Remix, and his international touring continued following the success of Bass Rani. He remains active in music production and live shows, with ongoing collaborations that include family contributions and design work through his and his wife’s brand.
