Nutan Biography

One of Indian cinema’s most respected actresses, Nutan built a decades-long career defined by sensitive, nuanced performances. Beginning as a child artist,

Early life and background
Nutan Samarth was born on 4 June 1936 in Bombay, then part of the Bombay Presidency in British India. She grew up in a filmi Marathi family: her mother, Shobhna Samarth, was a prominent actress of the 1940s and her father, Kumarsen Samarth, worked in filmmaking. Nutan received part of her schooling at St. Joseph’s Convent School in Panchgani and later attended La Chatelaine School in Switzerland. Trained early in classical singing and Kathak dance, she was introduced to the world of performance as a child.

Career
Nutan’s on-screen life began in the mid-1940s with a small role and she made her formal child-artist debut at age 14 in Hamari Beti (1950), a film directed by her mother. As a young adult she re-emerged in Hindi films, making her credited actress debut in Shabab (1954). After a brief period of limited success, her studies in Switzerland were followed by a breakthrough role in Seema, which established her as a dramatic actress and won widespread attention for both her acting and her musical performance in the film.

Through the 1950s and 1960s Nutan gave a string of memorable performances in films such as Heer, Baarish, Paying Guest, Kanhaiya, Bandini, Yaadgaar and Khandan. Bandini (1963), in particular, is noted as a turning point in her career, and she often credited director Bimal Roy for that opportunity. Nutan was known for a classical and traditional screen image, though she also took roles that surprised audiences, such as appearing in a swimsuit for Dilli Ka Thug (1958).

Her range and craft were recognized repeatedly: she won multiple Filmfare Awards for Best Actress for Seema (1956), Sujata (1959), Bandini (1963) and Radha (1967), and later earned a Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award in 1985 for Meri Jung. She also received several BFJA Best Actress awards and was honored by the Government of India with the Padma Shri in 1974.

Nutan continued to evolve as an artist into later decades, taking on varied and character-driven roles even after turning 40. In addition to acting she tried her hand at songwriting and singing; she wrote lyrics and sang Aye Mere Humsafar in Chhabili (1960). By the late 1980s her focus shifted increasingly toward family life and devotional music while guiding her son’s entry into films.

Public profile
Off-screen, Nutan’s life intersected with other film families. Her mother’s prominence in the industry and the careers of her sister Tanuja and niece Kajol highlight the family’s multi-generational presence in Indian cinema. She married Rajnish Bahl in October 1959 and became the mother of actor Mohnish Bahl.

Her professional reputation included admiration from contemporaries and later generations: actors such as Sadhana Shivdasani and Smita Patil regarded her as an influence, and critics and publications have placed her among the great actresses of Indian cinema. Nutan’s work and image were commemorated in later years by an Indian postage stamp released in February 2011 and a Google doodle marking what would have been her 81st birthday in 2018. A Marathi author also documented her life in a book focused on her personal narrative.

Personal challenges and final years
Nutan’s personal life had complexities that became public: she and her mother had a falling out over financial matters, and she at one point pursued legal action. In the late stages of her life she balanced family priorities and professional commitments. She was working on the films Garajna and Insaniyat when her health declined.

Nutan was admitted to Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai in February 1991 and died there on 21 February 1991 from breast cancer. At the time of her death she was 54. Posthumously, the film Naseebwala was released in 1992.

Latest updates
Nutan’s legacy has been periodically celebrated and reassessed through tributes, biographies and archival recognition. Her body of work, awards and honors continue to be highlighted in retrospectives, and her image and life story remain subjects of interest for film historians and fans.
