Om Birla was born on 23 November 1962 in Kota, Rajasthan. He grew up in the same city that he would later represent in state and national politics. Birla completed his higher education in Rajasthan, studying commerce at Govt. Commerce College in Kota and later at Maharshi Dayanand Saraswati University in Ajmer, where he earned a master’s degree in commerce.

His family background is rooted in the Vaishya (Baniya) community. His parents are Shrikrishna Birla and Shakuntala Devi. Birla is married to Dr. Amita Birla; the couple have two daughters. At the state level, Birla was first elected to the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly from the Kota South seat in 2003. He retained that constituency in the 2008 and 2013 assembly elections, defeating opponents from the Indian National Congress and reinforcing his local political base.

In 2014 Birla transitioned to national politics when he won the Lok Sabha seat from Kota.
