Early life and backgroundOmar Abdullah was born on 10 March 1970 in Rochford, Essex, United Kingdom, into a family long involved in Jammu and Kashmir politics. He grew up connected to the Kashmir Valley; his hometown is listed as Srinagar district. His father is Farooq Abdullah and his grandfather was Sheikh Abdullah, both of whom also served as Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir. His mother, Molly Abdullah, is noted as a British nurse.
Omar attended schools in India, including Burn Hall School in Sonwar Bagh, Srinagar, and The Lawrence School, Sanawar. He completed a B.Com degree at Sydenham College of Commerce and Economics in Mumbai in 1992.
Career
Omar entered electoral politics in the late 1990s. He was elected to the 12th Lok Sabha in 1998 and returned to the 13th Lok Sabha in 1999. Shortly after his second election, he joined the Union government led by Atal Bihari Vajpayee, first as Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry from 13 October 1999 and later as Union Minister of State for External Affairs beginning 22 July 2001.
In June 2002 he became President of the Jammu & Kashmir National Conference, taking on the party leadership from his father. He was re-elected as party president in 2006.
On 5 January 2009 Omar Abdullah became the 11th Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir. He resigned from the post on 24 December 2014.
In national and regional elections that followed, he contested the 2024 Lok Sabha election from Baramulla but lost to independent candidate Engineer Abdul Rashid. In the 2024 Jammu & Kashmir state elections he contested and won seats from the Budgam and Ganderbal constituencies. Following those results, on 16 October 2024 he took oath as the first Chief Minister of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
