Early life and background

Omkar Kulkarni was born on 15 July 1995 in a remote village in Maharashtra and grew up with ties to Mumbai, which is listed as his hometown. He attended Madhavrao Bhagwat High School in Mumbai and went on to complete a Bachelor’s degree in Mass Media from Mithibai College. His father, Dhananjay Kulkarni, is a cinematographer and his mother, Yogini Ganpule Kulkarni, worked as a primary school teacher. He has a younger sister named Savani Kulkarni. Kulkarni was drawn to performance from an early age and decided to pursue acting while he was in eighth grade.

Career

Kulkarni’s onstage experience began in earnest during his college days when he became involved with the Mithibai drama team. He started working professionally in theatre in 2013, performing at youth theatre festivals such as Thespo. He also took on technical responsibilities in theatre, working as a lighting designer on a number of productions and contributing lighting design for events including Tata Literature Live.

His screen debut came in the Marathi film Dream Mall in 2015. Over the next several years he moved between films, web series, short films and digital projects. In 2016 he portrayed a sound engineer in the Hindi film Shor Se Shuruaat, and in 2018 he appeared alongside Sharman Joshi in the Hindi feature 3 Storeys.

Kulkarni has been active on the digital scene as well. He appeared as Rocky in the ALTBalaji web series CyberSquad (2017) and played Shiv in The Insiders (2019), a web series produced by The Viral Fever that premiered on MX Player. His breakout recognition came with the role of Dhruv Sharma in the MX Player web series ImMature; he played the character in season 1 (2019) and returned for seasons 2 and 3 in 2022 and 2023.

Other screen credits include a role as a professor in the Hindi short film Money Heist X Free Fire: Summer Holiday Heist (2020), voice work for the Audible podcast Agla Station Investigation (2020), and the part of Oshir Pannu in the Hindi film Middle-Class Love (2022). He has appeared in an episode of the web series Bravehearts (2022) on Dice Media and made an episodic appearance in the television series Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya (2022) on Zing. In 2023 he was praised for his portrayal of Kshitij in The Talent Manager, a web series released on The Timeliners’ YouTube channel.
