Early life and background

Omprakash Rajbhar was born on 15 September 1962 in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. He grew up in the region and completed his schooling at Kendriya Vidyalaya 39 GTC Varanasi Cantt. He went on to graduate from Baldev Degree College in Badagaon, Varanasi in 1983. His father is named Sannu Rajbhar. Rajbhar’s upbringing and local roots in Varanasi helped shape his later involvement in regional politics.

Career

Rajbhar began his political activity in the early 1980s. He initially joined the Bahujan Samaj Party after being inspired by local leaders, and over time he moved between parties before creating his own political vehicle. He was involved with Apna Dal for a period and then established the Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP), serving as its president from 27 October 2002.

In 2017 Rajbhar won election to the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly from the Zahoorabad constituency. Following that victory, he was appointed to the state cabinet and held the portfolio for the Department of Disabled People Development from 19 March 2017 until 20 May 2019. His ministerial tenure ended when he was asked to resign amid reported disagreements with coalition partners.

Throughout his career Rajbhar has pursued issues affecting backward communities and rural constituencies. He is also described as an agriculturist in addition to his political activities. His family has a political presence as well: two of his sons, Arvind Rajbhar and Arun Rajbhar, are involved in politics.
