Early life and background

Aniruddha Sen, who works professionally as Oni Sen, was born on 30 September in West Bengal, India. He studied at the National Institute of Design in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, earning a Bachelor of Design with a specialization in films. During his student years he formed lasting creative connections; one of his contemporaries at NID was K. K. Muralidharan. Oni later settled into a life that balances filmmaking with photography and illustration.

Career

Oni Sen’s early work in moving image began in the 1990s and he made a deliberate transition into filmmaking in 1994. He has built a varied career directing commercials, short films, a documentary and long-form scripted work. Between 1996 and 2023 he directed and produced advertisements for a range of national and international brands, including Nike, HP, Coca-Cola, Amazon, Bose, Aircel, Horlicks, Bacardi, Lay’s and Tanishq. His Horlicks Gold commercial, launched in 2011, became widely noticed for its focus on the relationship between a mother and her growing child.

In 2010 Sen co-founded Electric Dreams Film Company with Suparna Chatterjee, a production house the pair worked with over an extended period. He also collaborated with other creative ventures through his career, while his wife Rachna Rastogi Sen went on to co-found a multidisciplinary design studio in Mumbai.

Sen made his documentary debut with The Saints of Sin in 2016. He has also shared his experience and insights in academic and public forums, including a TEDx talk at the Vishwakarma Institute of Technology in Pune in November 2017 and a brief stint as visiting faculty for a creative communication course at the Mudra Institute of Communications, Ahmedabad, in February 2018.

Oni Sen gained wider mainstream recognition as the director of the first season of the Hindi web series Asur: Welcome to Your Dark Side, which premiered on the Voot streaming platform in March 2020.
