Osho (Rajneesh) Biography

Osho, born Chandra Mohan Jain, was an Indian mystic and spiritual teacher who founded a global meditation movement. Known for unconventional teachings that

Early life and background
Chandra Mohan Jain was born on 11 December 1931 in Kuchwada village, Bareli tehsil, Raisen district, in what is now Madhya Pradesh, India. He grew up in a Jain family and spent his earliest years under the care of his maternal grandparents, an upbringing he later said gave him a sense of freedom that affected his outlook on life. After his grandfather’s death he moved to his parents’ home in Gadarwara. He was a strong debater and a gifted student in school.

He attended Hitkarini College and D. N. Jain College in Jabalpur and completed an M.A. in philosophy from the University of Sagar. As a young man he participated in annual Sarva Dharma Sammelans held by the Taranpanthi Jain community and developed interests that ranged from anti-theism to hypnosis. He claimed an experience of enlightenment on 21 March 1953 in a garden in Jabalpur.

Career
After finishing his studies, Jain became a teacher and lecturer. He held a teaching post at Sanskrit College in Raipur and later taught at Jabalpur University, where he rose to the rank of professor by 1960. During the 1960s he travelled across India as a public speaker, criticizing forms of orthodoxy and conventional politics and expanding a public following through lectures and debates.

In 1962 he began running meditation camps from his Jivan Jagruti Kendra, which later developed into the Jivan Jagruti Andolan (Life Awakening Movement). Controversy led to his resignation from a teaching post after a speech in 1966, but he continued to build a movement through public discourse.

On 26 September 1970 he initiated disciples as neo-sannyasins and soon after moved to Mumbai, where he lectured extensively. He adopted the title Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh in the early 1970s and in 1974 established an ashram in Pune that would later be known as the Osho International Meditation Resort. The Pune ashram became the centre for his daily schedule of meditation followed by spontaneous lectures, and it attracted participants and therapists from the Human Potential Movement during the 1970s.

In 1981 he relocated to the United States and set up a community in Wasco County, Oregon, known as Rajneeshpuram. While in the US he observed a period of self-imposed silence beginning in April 1981, during which he sat in satsang with music and religious readings. He ended that silence in October 1984 and resumed public discourses in mid-1985.

Osho developed and promoted a number of meditation techniques aimed at increasing self-awareness and breaking conditioned responses. These included Dynamic Meditation, Kundalini (shaking) meditation, Nadabrahma (humming) meditation and the Mystic Rose, a practice combining extended periods of laughter, weeping and silence.

Public profile
Osho’s teachings combined elements from various religious and philosophical traditions and emphasized meditation, personal freedom and a questioning of rigid belief systems. He was outspoken on social issues such as contraception and birth control, which he argued should be treated as medical matters rather than political ones.

His lifestyle and views attracted both admiration and strong criticism. In India and abroad he was a polarizing figure: praised by some intellectuals and readers, and accused by others of promoting unconventional practices. He changed his public title to Osho Rajneesh in February 1989 and rebranded his movement under the name Osho.

Legal battles and controversies surrounding the Oregon community led to significant repercussions. After charges and legal action in the mid-1980s he was deported from the United States and returned to his ashram in Pune. These events limited his ability to travel internationally in later years.

Later years and legacy
Following his return to India, Osho continued to teach until his health declined. He delivered his final speech in April 1989 and spent his remaining public appearances in silence. He died of heart failure on 19 January 1990 at the Pune ashram; his ashes were kept at the ashram’s Lao Tzu House.

Osho left a large recorded output: more than 650 books derived from his taped discourses are available in multiple languages. His work has been preserved in Indian institutional collections and his meditation centres have continued to attract participants worldwide. By 2008 the movement he founded had expanded to dozens of centres and tens of thousands of followers, and the Osho International Foundation organizes workshops and stress-management seminars for corporate clients.

Latest updates
After his death the Osho movement continued to evolve: the Pune ashram operates as the Osho International Meditation Resort, and the Osho International Foundation runs programs and seminars internationally. Public interest in his writings and recorded lectures has persisted, and his techniques remain part of the curriculum at Osho centres around the world.
