Early life and backgroundPalaniappan Chidambaram was born on 16 September 1945 in Kanadukathan in Sivaganga district, Tamil Nadu. He comes from the Nagarathar (Chettiar) community; his mother, Lakshmi Achi, was the daughter of Sir Annamalai Chettiar. Chidambaram grew up in Tamil Nadu and completed his schooling in Chennai before moving on to higher studies at Presidency College and Madras Law College. He later earned an MBA from Harvard Business School.
Career
Chidambaram began his public life in the Indian National Congress, joining the party in 1972 and becoming part of the All India Congress Committee the same year. He held organisational roles in the party’s Tamil Nadu unit, including Youth Congress President for the state and General Secretary of the Pradesh Congress Committee in the 1970s.
He entered Parliament in 1984 as the Lok Sabha member from Sivaganga and went on to be re-elected several times. Early ministerial assignments in the 1980s and early 1990s included junior positions in commerce, administrative reforms and home affairs. During the 1990s he shifted between parties, leaving the Congress in 1996 to join the Tamil Maanila Congress and later leading Congress Jananayaka Peravai before merging that party back into the Indian National Congress in 2005.
Chidambaram is best known for his long association with India’s finance portfolio. He served as Finance Minister in 1996 and again became indelibly associated with the role during the United Progressive Alliance years, holding the finance portfolio in Manmohan Singh’s government from 2004 and returning to the post in 2012 after Pranab Mukherjee became President of India. He also served as Union Home Minister following the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks. In 2016 he was elected to the Rajya Sabha; in June 2022 he resigned his Maharashtra seat after being elected to the Upper House from Tamil Nadu for a fresh term.
