Early life and background

Prashanta Kumar Halder, known publicly as P.K. Halder and sometimes by the nickname Moru, was born and raised in Matibhanga, Nazirpur in Bangladesh. He comes from a middle‑class family; his father, Pralab Chandra Halder, worked as a tailor and his mother, Lilabati Halder, was a schoolteacher. He attended Dighirjan High School and pursued higher studies at the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology and the Institute of Business Administration at Dhaka University, completing an MBA.

Career

Halder built a career in the country’s finance sector, advancing from executive roles to senior leadership. By 2008 he had been promoted to deputy manager at the Industrial and Infrastructure Development Finance Company Limited (IDFCL). The following year he became managing director of Reliance Finance Limited. Over time he held top roles at other firms, including People’s Leasing and Financial Services Limited and International Leasing and Financial Services Limited, and served as managing director of NRB Global Bank (now Global Islami Bank).

Beyond bank posts, Halder acquired or controlled several manufacturing and trading concerns, including businesses in the jute and chemical sectors. In 2014 he established a Canada‑based company called P&L Hal Holding and owned additional entities under names such as HAL International. Associates and family members joined his commercial network; at least one cousin served on boards of companies where Halder had influence.

Allegations, investigation and legal action

Between 2015 and 2019 a series of financial irregularities and alleged embezzlements came to light involving multiple nonbank financial institutions and finance companies. Regulatory authorities and investigators flagged substantial fund shortages across several companies, including International Leasing and Financial Services Ltd., FAS Finance and Investment Ltd., People’s Leasing & Financial Services Limited, and Reliance Finance Ltd. These discoveries prompted probes by the Anti‑Corruption Commission and the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit.

In late 2020 and 2021 investigators took a number of actions: properties were seized, associates were questioned, travel bans and other restrictions were imposed on some individuals, and formal charges were filed against Halder and several collaborators. Multiple associates were arrested or otherwise detained in connection with the investigations. In March 2020 Halder left Bangladesh and subsequently obtained Canadian citizenship, and investigators say he used that period abroad while the probes progressed.

In May 2022 Indian authorities located and arrested Halder in Ashoknagar, North 24 Parganas, West Bengal. Reports from the time indicate he had been using an alternate name while in India and held passports from more than one country.

Public profile

Halder’s situation drew sustained media and regulatory attention because of the scale of the allegations and his positions within multiple financial institutions. Public reporting has described the involvement of several business associates and relatives in transactions and company appointments connected to him. During the investigations authorities conducted raids and interrogations, and the Anti‑Corruption Commission summoned numerous people for questioning.

Personal life

Publicly available profiles indicate Halder was unmarried. Reporting from investigators and court documents has referenced two women described as close companions of his during the period under scrutiny. He has at least two brothers, identified as Pijush Halder and Pranesh Halder, who have been described as businessmen.

Latest updates

Legal developments continued through 2021 and into 2022, with charges filed by the Anti‑Corruption Commission and the arrest in India in May 2022. Seizure of property in Bangladesh and additional investigative actions by financial regulators and law enforcement followed the public disclosures about the alleged frauds. As of May 2022, authorities in India had taken Halder into custody and the matter remained subject to cross‑border legal processes and further proceedings.
