Early life and backgroundPusarla Venkata Sindhu was born on 5 July 1995 in Hyderabad, India. Raised in a sporting family—both her parents were volleyball players—she grew up in Hyderabad and attended Auxilium High School in Secunderabad before moving on to St. Ann’s College for Women in Mehdipatnam. Sindhu began playing badminton around the age of eight and a half and developed her early skills at the Indian Railway Institute in Secunderabad under coach Mehboob Ali. Her elder sister, Divyaram Pusarla, was a national-level handball player who later became a doctor.
Career
Sindhu made her international debut in 2009 at the Sub-Junior Asian Badminton Championships in Colombo. Coached by Pullela Gopichand, who is also the chief coach of the Indian badminton team, she established herself rapidly on the junior and then senior international circuit. A pivotal moment in her early career was winning gold at the 2011 Douglas Commonwealth Youth Games in the girls’ singles event.
From junior success she transitioned into one of the world’s top singles players. Sindhu’s medal record at major events is extensive: she has won gold at the 2012 Asian Junior Championships, the 2016 South Asian Games women’s team event, the 2018 Commonwealth Games mixed team event, the 2019 World Championships in women’s singles, and the 2022 Commonwealth Games women’s singles. She has collected multiple silver and bronze medals across Olympics, World Championships, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games and continental championships, including an Olympic silver medal at Rio 2016 and an Olympic bronze at Tokyo 2020.
Sindhu reached her highest world ranking of No. 2 on 7 April 2017. Other notable achievements include becoming the first Indian woman’s singles player to win a medal at the Badminton World Championships in 2013, and securing the BWF World Tour title in 2018 after defeating Nozomi Okuhara. She also won the Singapore Open in July 2022, adding to a long list of international titles.

Sindhu’s performances have been recognised with several national honours. She received the Arjuna Award in 2013, the Padma Shri in 2015, and the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award in 2016.
