Early life and background

Padma Parvati Lakshmi Vaidynathan was born on September 1, 1970, in Madras (now Chennai). She spent her childhood moving between Chennai, where she lived with maternal grandparents for stretches, and the United States with her mother. Her parents separated when she was very young and both later remarried.

Lakshmi attended William Workman High School in California, completing school in 1988. She continued her studies at Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts and also studied at a college in Madrid. She earned a BA (Hons) in Theatre Arts. Growing up she experienced serious health challenges, including Stevens-Johnson syndrome as a teenager and a subsequent car crash that left a prominent scar on her right arm.

Career

While studying in Madrid in her early twenties, Lakshmi was discovered by a modelling agent and began a career in fashion. Her modelling work led her to major fashion capitals including Paris, Milan and New York, and she worked for designers such as Gianni Versace, Giorgio Armani, Ralph Lauren and Emanuel Ungaro. The arm scar that resulted from an earlier injury became a distinctive feature of her public image.

Lakshmi expanded from modelling into television and film. Her first on-screen work includes the 1995 documentary Unzipped and a 2001 film credit for Glitter. She made an early television hosting appearance on the Italian program Domenica In in 1997. Later television work included hosting the British series Planet Food and her Food Network show Padma’s Passport: My Mother’s Kitchen.

Her publishing career began with the cookbook Easy Exotic, released in 1999. That book won Best First Book at the 1999 Gourmand World Cookbook Awards and helped open doors to further culinary and media projects. She followed with Tangy, Tart, Hot and Sweet: A World of Recipes for Every Day in 2007, and she published a memoir, Love, Loss, and What We Ate, in 2016.

On American television she became best known as the host and a judge of the cooking competition Top Chef, beginning in 2006. In addition to books and television, Lakshmi has launched product lines including a jewellery line called Padma, tableware collections, and lines of specialty teas, spices and organic frozen rices.

Public profile

Lakshmi has written for prominent publications, maintaining a column in The New York Times and contributing to Harper’s Bazaar. She has been featured on the covers of numerous magazines including Vogue India, Harper’s Bazaar and Cosmopolitan. She is bilingual and multilingual, speaking Tamil, French, Italian and Hindi in addition to English.

She is a co-founder of the Endometriosis Foundation of America alongside Dr. Tamer Seckin and is involved with other charities such as Keep a Child Alive, amfAR and the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation. In 2005 she received a diagnosis of endometriosis, a condition she has discussed publicly.

Lakshmi has been open about personal experiences that have informed her public work. She disclosed in 2018 that she was sexually assaulted at age 16, a revelation she wrote about in an op-ed for The New York Times. She has also written publicly about complexities in her personal life, including questions surrounding paternity during a 2009 pregnancy and a later custody arrangement with the child’s father.

Personal life

Padma Lakshmi was married to author Salman Rushdie from 2004 until their divorce in 2007. She has one daughter, Krishna Thea Lakshmi-Dell, born following a 2009 pregnancy; the child’s father is Adam R. Dell, with whom Lakshmi later reached a custody agreement. Her parents are Vaidyanathan, who worked as an executive in the pharmaceutical industry, and Vijaya Lakshmi, an oncologist. She has one half-brother and one half-sister on her father’s side.

Latest updates

In addition to continuing on-screen and publishing work, Lakshmi has broadened her entrepreneurial footprint with culinary product lines and tableware. She remains active in advocacy related to endometriosis and public health, and continues to contribute writing to major outlets while appearing on television and in public forums.
