Early life and background

Born Dukh Haran on 4 February 1938 in Handia, in what was then Allahabad district (now Prayagraj), Uttar Pradesh, the artist who became widely known as Pandit Birju Maharaj hailed from a family steeped in the Lucknow tradition of Kathak. He trained from a very young age under his uncles, including Pandit Lachhu Maharaj and Pandit Shambhu Maharaj, and began performing publicly while still a child. His father, Pandit Jagannath Maharaj (also known as Pandit Acchan Maharaj), was a court dancer, and Birju Maharaj grew up immersed in the dancing and music of his gharana.

He pursued formal study as well, attending institutions that included Banaras Hindu University and Khairagarh University, and he completed graduation at the University of Central Lancashire in England. Over time he received advanced degrees in classical dance and singing, including honorary doctorates, and developed a reputation both as a performer and as a scholar of Kathak.

Career

Maharaj’s professional life combined performance, choreography, teaching and composition. He began performing at family events and public functions as a boy and went on to appear in theatres and at high-profile state events, including multiple performances at Rashtrapati Bhavan. After the death of his father he moved to Delhi and, by his early teens, was teaching at Sangeet Bharti. He later joined Bharatiya Kala Kendra (which became Kathak Kendra) in New Delhi, eventually serving as the head of the academy until his retirement in 1988.

Following his retirement from the national academy, he established Kalashram in New Delhi, a school that later opened a branch in the United States. Kalashram offered training in Kathak alongside instruction in music, yoga, painting, Sanskrit, dramatics and stagecraft. Over the years he mentored many dancers who themselves became prominent practitioners of Kathak.

As a performer, Birju Maharaj toured widely, presenting Kathak across India and internationally — in Europe, Russia, Japan, the United States and other countries. He was closely identified with the Lucknow "Kalka-Bindadin" gharana and became known for particular percussive phrases and rhythmic innovations that entered the repertoire. He favored narrative themes such as Krishna–Radha and Shiva–Parvati and created many popular pieces within the classical repertoire.

Maharaj also worked in Indian cinema as a choreographer and singer. He choreographed song sequences for actors including Madhuri Dixit, Kamal Haasan, Deepika Padukone and Alia Bhatt, and he received recognition for his film choreography. He lent his voice to film songs across decades and regularly performed and recorded thumris and other semi-classical vocal forms. He was also an accomplished instrumentalist, skilled on tabla, flute and dholak and familiar with string instruments such as sitar, sarod, violin and sarangi.

Public profile

During his lifetime Birju Maharaj received numerous awards and honors that acknowledged his contributions to Indian classical dance and music. Early in his career he was a recipient of the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (1964), and later he was honored with some of India’s highest civilian and arts awards, including the Padma Vibhushan. His recognitions included national film awards and major state and cultural honors, honorary doctorates, and many prizes from music and dance institutions.

He published poetry under the pen name Brij Shyam and released a poetry collection in 2020. His poem "Anubhuti" was released in 2013. As a public artist he collaborated with leading musicians and appeared at prestigious international venues such as Royal Albert Hall and the Kennedy Center.

Later life and death

Maharaj continued teaching, composing and performing into his later years. On 16 January 2022 he experienced breathing difficulties while playing antakshari with family and disciples; he was taken to hospital and died the following day, 17 January 2022, in Delhi. He was 83. His passing was followed by tributes and, subsequently, the issuance of a commemorative music special cover in 2022 honoring him as a Kathak maestro.

Controversies

After his death, some former disciples made allegations during the #MeToo movement. These accounts were part of public discussion in 2022.

Latest updates

In 2022 a special postal cover celebrating Pandit Birju Maharaj as a Kathak maestro was issued. His legacy continues through his students, recordings, choreographies and the Kalashram schools that carry forward his approach to Kathak.
